Kate’s Philosophy

Libraries are the heart of a community—connecting diverse groups, fostering opportunities for learning and growth, and driving innovation and progress through adaptation and technology. Public libraries, in particular, serve as non-traditional classrooms for everyone, from toddlers at story time to seniors navigating new technologies. They are hubs of knowledge, inclusion, and transformation.

While I don’t have traditional library work experience, I see this as an asset. My philosophy is shaped by academic learning, insightful discussions with professors, and collaboration with classmates, giving me a fresh perspective unbound by preconceived practices. My passion lies in public librarianship, where the core mission is to meet the needs of the entire community and to lead with empathy and inclusivity.

Community building is central to librarianship. To fulfill this mission, libraries must continuously evaluate resources, services, and outreach efforts. Partnerships with key community leaders are essential for creating and executing programs that resonate. These collaborations ensure libraries adapt to evolving demographics, fill gaps in service, and engage underrepresented groups. Libraries that embrace change become more effective as the needs of their patrons evolve.

I view libraries as dynamic spaces for lifelong learning. Teaching isn’t confined to schools; it happens in every corner of a public library. Whether introducing children to the joy of reading or empowering adults with digital literacy skills, libraries provide opportunities for growth at every life stage. To maintain this role, it’s critical that library staff remain informed and trained in emerging technologies, allowing the library to serve as a trusted resource for guidance and support.

As the world grows increasingly uncertain, libraries offer stability and reliability. By fostering connections, embracing innovation, and adapting to change, libraries stand as pillars of their communities—places where everyone can feel supported and inspired. I am proud to be part of this work and to contribute to the continued evolution of libraries as centers of opportunity and inclusion.
